ABSTRACT:
Storion Energy’s vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) stack power assembly, integrated within TerraFlow Energy’s Long Duration Uninterruptible Power Supply (LDUPS™) architecture, delivers ultra-fast DC-link control for AI data centers and mission-critical infrastructure—while unlocking new grid service opportu-nities at scale.
Storion’s VRFB stack power assembly is shown to deliver ultra-high output speeds, and function like a capacitor with the potential for hours of available energy. Integrating the Storion stack with TerraFlow Energy’s unique LDUPS™ design enables sub-5 ms bidirectional current control that stabilizes load events and maintains continuous power quality across generator, grid, and inverter transitions. TerraFlow’s inte-gration of a VRFB directly into the DC bus architecture takes full advantage of Storion’s stack microsecond-class electrochemical reaction speeds. The result of combining the two systems is a single long-duration system that enhances operational resilience, reduces generator stress, and enables fast-response ancil-lary services.
Key findings:
- Stack Intrinsic speed: Single-cell testing shows ≈8.1 μs reaction time and ≈43 A/μs slew (area-scaled), confirming the stack and chemistry are not the rate-limiting factor.
- System response: In UPS tests, the inverter output reaches its target current in ≈250 μs; stack takeover completes in ≈1.2–2.5 ms, depending on initial current.
- Stability: An 8.5 s / 14.3 kHz burst sequence showed no drift in current, voltage, or energy per cycle, confirming stable high-frequency behavior.
